All These Falling Leaves Have Me Thinking About Compost

This time of year is perfect for starting a compost pile. The leaves you’re raking up are the “brown” material every compost needs. They add carbon and help keep the pile balanced. Pair them with “green” material like your kitchen scraps, and you have everything you need to make rich, dark compost for spring planting.

Everywhere I look right now, the ground is covered in leaves. It’s one of my favorite parts of fall—the sound of them underfoot, the smell of the season changing, and the quiet reminder that everything in nature has a cycle. Nothing is ever really wasted.

How to Get Started

You don’t need a big yard or fancy setup. Composting is simple, even in small spaces.

  • Gather your browns. Dry leaves, small branches, and twigs form the base.

  • Add your greens. Fruit and vegetable scraps, coffee grounds, and crushed eggshells work beautifully.

  • Skip the rest. Avoid oils, processed foods, meat, or dairy.

  • Turn the pile. Every week or two, mix it to let in air and keep moisture even—damp but not soggy.

With a little time and consistency, everything will break down into nutrient-rich compost that feeds your garden, containers, or even indoor plants.

Closing the Circle

At Ambrosia, we think of composting as the natural companion to our bags. Our mission has always been to help you use more of what you buy—keeping produce fresh longer and reducing waste. When something does wilt or soften, composting gives it another purpose. It completes the circle: fresh produce becomes nourishing meals, and what’s left returns to the earth to grow more food.

A Season of Renewal

That’s the beauty of this season. The leaves are falling, the garden is resting, and the kitchen becomes the heart of it all. Fall invites us to slow down and care for what sustains us—from the soil beneath our feet to the food on our tables.

If you’ve been thinking about starting a compost pile, consider this your gentle nudge to begin. You’ll be amazed by how much less you throw away—and how much more connected you feel to the food you bring home.

Warmly,
