How Food Rescue US is Making a Difference
Food waste is a pressing issue in the United States, with millions of pounds of excess food ending up in landfills each year. In 2021 alone, 91 million tons of food went unsold or uneaten. This not only represents a massive loss of resources—such as water, labor, and energy—but also contributes to environmental degradation. The EPA estimates that each person in the U.S. generates about 549 pounds of food waste annually, and their goal is to reduce this to 164 pounds per person by 2030.
Food Rescue US mobilizes local volunteers to pick up excess healthy food from local donors and deliver it directly to social service agencies that provide food to the food insecure. By rescuing this food, they help reduce waste and ensure that nutritious meals reach those who need them most.
